Outstanding Drama Series

The Bold and the Beautiful

I was surprised to see that the What If? series was nominated in the New Approaches-Daytime Entertainment category. I'm not sure I even remember this category, but since ABC is in the process of cancelling their soaps I am guessing we won't be seeing What If? again. It's too bad because that was a really innovative idea and it could have easily translated across all networks.

General Hospital is nominated in the Outstanding Promotional Announcement-Episodic category for the "Brenda's Back" promo. Say what you will about General Hospital but they do have some intriguing promos. I have to say though I am surprised this particular one got nominated for an Emmy. I wouldn't rank that as being one of their best.

Since I don't watch all the soaps it would be unfair of me to comment on who I think is most deserving of an Emmy this year. I will say that I would like Laura Wright to win simply because I have admired her work for years and I think this nomination is long overdue. I also would like to see Chad Duell win in the younger actor category. As annoying as Michael is right now, Chad has done an outstanding job in that role, especially considering that he stepped into it in the middle of an ongoing storyline and was given complex material right up front. Of course no matter who walks away with an Emmy this is likely to be a bittersweet awards show with three canceled soaps being recognized. In addition there are people nominated who have either left their respective shows or are getting ready to. To add insult to injury, Wayne Brady, the host of Let's Make a Deal, aka Guiding Light's replacement, will be hosting the Emmys. I have nothing against Wayne Brady, in fact I'm a fan and I'm sure he will do a wonderful job as host; but I'm also sure soap fans are not going to appreciate yet another reminder of what has been lost.

So there you have it - the list of nominees, at least soap opera related nominees. Who are your picks to win? Any favorites? Anyone you think was overlooked? Sound off in the comment section.

  1. I'm a little puzzled why Maurice Bernard was nominated but anyway, glad to see the other actors (Joshua Jackson, Nancy Lee Grahn) were nominated. Hope they win.

  2. Hi Peggy!

I was a little surprised he was nominated as well. Then again I'm not really sure what reel he submitted either.

    Thanks for commenting!

  3. It does suck that we won't see more of What If. It would have been nice if they went beyond the elevator and plane scenes. It was fun seeing the characters from different soaps interact with each other. I loved the one with Spinelli and Todd.

I'm baffled about James Scott's nomination. They should create a whole new category for him since outstanding he isn't. I'm not even sure if I'd like him on something else but I can't stand him in this role. I hated Alistair Crane but at least he was played by a good actor once they decided to give the character a face.

I'm a bit torn in the lead actress category since I really like most of the choices. They showed that one commercial with Laura so many times I kind of felt like I watched GH and got sick of her talking about getting revenge on Dante which never made any sense to me. But I do know she's a good actress since I did watch her on Loving.

I watched ages ago and started watching AMC again because of Lindsay but I've really enjoyed Alicia as Kendall. I did watch a bit when Sarah was Kendall. I just wish I started watching sooner since I've fallen in love with a lot of the characters in Pine Valley although I'm not sure what to make of the latest doppleganger. Tis the season. I'll make sure to peek outside before opening the door since I don't want to run into mine.

  4. Hi Bard Girl!

They sort of left What If? to be continued too didn't they? Wasn't the last episode the one with Kelly Monaco and Michael Easton? I really wanted to see the conclusion to that one too.

I never understood the Carly revenge on Dante either. I hated that storyline in fact.

  5. Yeah I do think it was those two who I did love on Port Charles. I guess I'm just a sucker for vampires but it might have a little to do with Michael since I've had a bit of a crush on him since he was on Days as Tanner.

I catch GH every so often but that never made sense to me. Carly and Sonny were the ones that screwed over their kid not Dante who was just trying to help although it backfired on him. Since it was self defense he wouldn't have had to go to prison in the first place if the cops were just called instead of hiding the body.

  6. Hi Bard Girl!

    Loved them on Port Charles!

I so agree with you about GH too. That whole Michael storyline and blaming Dante was just ridiculous.

10 Ways General Hospital Could Improve

I doubt if I'm alone in saying that there is a lot wrong with General Hospital these days. While it continues to be one of my favorite soaps there are many changes I would make immediately if I had the power. Below is a list of the top ten suggestions I have for the way the show could improve. 1. The Claire/Sonny storyline needs to be dropped. It isn't working. Their conversations are boring and the context of their relationship is, well...icky. 2. Amp up Lisa's craziness. Despite my earlier distaste for a Robin/Patrick/Lisa triangle, the obsessed ex-girlfriend angle is working. It's interesting and very soapy. 3. Ronnie needs to be established as either a cop with a chip on his shoulder or someone who works for Franco. So far I haven't been able to tell whether Ronnie falls more on the side of good or bad because this character hasn't been clearly defined. 4. Brenda's life away from Port Charles and the people that surround it need to become an int...

Darkness and Light: GH

Like many General Hospital fans, I watch the show everyday in a blissful state of denial, never acknowledging the fact that Sonny and Jason are criminals. I find it easy to denounce Mac when he is urging Maxie to stay away from Spinelli, and I cheer for Diane whenever she keeps someone from the Corinthos organization from going to prison. However, as I watched the events of the week unfold, knowing that they were inevitably going to lead to Dante's shooting, my rose-colored glasses came off and I quickly snapped back to reality. I found myself repulsed watching Jason standing in the church during Josslyn's christening, knowing that he had just signed Dante's death certificate without giving it a second thought. I was even repulsed by Spinelli, whose detective work set everything into motion. Moreover, I was sickened by his cavalier attitude regarding Dante's imminent demise, and the fact that he never showed an ounce of remorse or regret until Maxie told him that Lulu h...

Crazy Loves Company: GH

If ever there was a storyline or a character over utilized it would be the saga of Lisa Niles. I am both mentally and physically exhausted by the constant back and forth between Lisa & Robin, Lisa & Patrick, Robin & Patrick, and Robin & everyone else. Now new doctor Terrell has been thrown into the mix as another man powerless against Lisa's charms. It is difficult enough at this point to watch Lisa create a path of destruction all by herself, but now that she has help I'm not sure I have the energy to watch any more of her schemes. Lisa had the potential to be an intriguing soap villain; and for a while it seemed like she may have had the potential to be a redeemable villain (see Miss Diagnosis ). However her crazy behavior as well as the motivation behind this behavior is too much to grasp, particularly for someone who supposedly passed her psych evaluation at Shady Brook. Moreover it doesn't make sense that she could talk someone like Terrell into helping...
