Perhaps no one has complained about the Scullys more than me. I believe I said on more than a few occasions that I rued the day they arrived in Port Charles and I meant it. I still think Joe was one of the worst written soap villains ever. He was virtually irredeemable and that's saying a lot for a soap opera character. Needless to say I wholeheartedly welcomed his exit. Trey, however, was a different story. I wasn't particularly fond of this character in the beginning...okay I hated Trey too. He grated on my nerves almost as much as Joe did; but when I found out he was Kate's son, suddenly he had storyline potential. Moreover he had the potential to be likable. I had hoped with Joe out of the way, it would make room for a moving mother/son relationship between Kate and Trey. Obviously that never happened. Kate found out Trey was her son and promptly switched back to being Connie. I've put up with Connie all these months in much the same way I did Trey for a long time. I assumed at some point Connie would go back to being Kate and she and Trey would finally have a meaningful relationship. This was the big payoff that never happened because Trey is now dead and it seems we are stuck with Connie. This is a waste on so many levels. First of all this Connie isn't the Connie we all became familiar with when Kate first came to Port Charles. The writers don't seem to know that we, the audience, knew who Connie was supposed to be when she lived in Bensonhurst...and this isn't her. This is some cartoonish, exaggerated version of Connie. As for Trey, this is the only relatively new character who had any potential for longevity on this show. We all know that at some point Maxie and Spinelli will get back together and Ellie will be a distant memory. I'm actually surprised the show has devoted as much time to her as they have. In addition, every new character in Patrick's orbit is completely replaceable and totally forgettable, should Robin ever come back to town. They have no significant ties to Port Charles and very little complexity, making it almost impossible for any of them to hold the audience's attention for very long. This brings me to the simple question of why? Why, out of all these new characters did GH decide to get rid of Trey? Why did they decide to kill him off after he became likable? And why, oh why did GH go out of their way to re-write Kate's history to include a son if they never had any intention of them developing a relationship with each other?
After months of allowing herself to be deceived and manipulated by Nicole and Stefano so that she could keep her baby's adoption intact, only to find out that said baby wasn't hers because her baby had died, one would think that Mia would have enough drama to last a lifetime. Instead it seems that she has picked up a few bad habits from Nicole because she has turned to manipulating Gabi in order to stake her claim on Chad, someone she didn't seem to want a few weeks ago. As if the Mia character wasn't irritating enough already, this newly calculative Mia is actually making me feel sorry for Gabi, which only makes her that much more irritating. I was stunned that she used Nicole's hearing as an opportunity to drive a wedge between Chad and Gabi, the same hearing that they were discussing her baby's death and the kidnapping of Will's baby sister. In doing this she not only undermined Will's importance in her life, but Sydney and Grace's as well...and p...
I couldn't agree more. I really ended up liking the character and thought that him and Christina had a great chemistry. So very sad to waste a good character like that. I guess someone has to go to make room financially for the oldies, but goodies coming to town like a landslide. I'm sure their not working for nothing. I'm loving some of the older characters, but I hope that we don't sacrifice the future of GH for the past.
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting Kat! That is a very good point. I love that some of the older characters are returning which is likely why we are seeing cuts; but like you I really hope that the writers don't sacrifice GH's future for their past, especially if all the familiar faces are only coming temporarily because of the 50th anniversary.
