Big Day of Soap News

On Wednesday evening soap viewers received two rather unexpected announcements. The first came in the form of a tweet from OLTL's Robin Strasser (Dorian) who told her fans that she would have to end her run on the show sooner than expected, meaning she will not be there when the show ends early next year. Strasser said "I'll have to leave OLTL sooner than the cancellation date, for compelling health reasons. Unable 2 meet high standards I owe our great show." She then went on to say "BUMMER! Darn right. WISDOM indicates a GRACE-full exit, before I fall on my bum. "Always leave 'em laughin". With Tuc and luck, hope I will!" So far no announcement has been made about when her last day of taping will be and certainly no final airdate has been determined, but I will keep you posted.

In other, perhaps bigger news, Robert Guza, Jr. has been replaced as headwriter by Garin Wolf. Wolf, as you might recall, was responsible for the storylines we saw during the writers' strike. As many have reported this change is effective immediately. Reaction to this news has been mixed. Many General Hospital fans have been lobbying for someone to replace Guza for years so to some this comes as a welcome change. However given everything that has happened at ABC recently it is difficult for me personally to see this as something positive. I certainly don't want to contribute anything to the rumor mill because believe me I am no more informed than any other GH viewer; but given that AMC brought on a new headwriter a mere two weeks before announcing its cancellation I can't help but be concerned for GH's future.

  1. Paula,

I see your point but maybe it's a good thing to replace the head writer at this point with all the dangling story lines that need to be fixed.

  2. Hi Peggy!

I agree, I definitely think that GH needs different writing. It's a mess right now. I don't even have the desire to complain about it anymore because I barely have the desire to watch it at this point. I just hope that I'm wrong and this isn't a repeat of the AMC thing. With Katie Couric leaving CBS today and all the rumors of ABC wanting to give her a talk show it just seems a bit too neat and tidy to me, but who knows there have been a lot of strange occurrences in the soap world lately.

  3. I was so bummed when I heard this news. I loved Robin on Passions as Hecuba and I love her on OLTL.

I did hear that it was possible that GH could be next on the chopping block in about a year. Hopefully that won't happen. I've watched it here and there but I do know what it's like to lose a show you love. It has happened too many times. Passions was really painful since I watched that from the beginning but I'm sure Days would really be a big blow too since I've watched that for so many years since the babysitter just happened to have it on which led to my soap opera addiction.

  4. It will be sad to see Robin Strasser (Dorian)leave, I love her acting style so much!

I too am also concerned for the fate of #GH!

  5. Hi Bard Girl!

You are right this has happened too many times. I never thought when I saw Another World get canceled it would only be the beginning.

  6. Hi TLContessa!

Although I don't keep up with OLTL that much, it's a shame Robin won't be able to stay with the show til the end. I'm sure this is as disappointing to her as it is the fans. I can't imagine being on a show that long and not being able to be there when it wraps. You're right it will be sad.

  7. Oh, no, I had been hoping for a final showdown between Dorian and Viki! So disappointing :(

In other news, Paula's Soapbox, you took the thought right out of my head: could a new head write spell doom for the last ABC soap standing?

    God, what is going ON?

  8. Hi C. Ann!

Thanks for visiting my site and for commenting. I hope you come back often.

I hope I'm wrong about the changes at GH, but with everything ABC has done recently one has to wonder.

All About Mia: DOOL

After months of allowing herself to be deceived and manipulated by Nicole and Stefano so that she could keep her baby's adoption intact, only to find out that said baby wasn't hers because her baby had died, one would think that Mia would have enough drama to last a lifetime. Instead it seems that she has picked up a few bad habits from Nicole because she has turned to manipulating Gabi in order to stake her claim on Chad, someone she didn't seem to want a few weeks ago. As if the Mia character wasn't irritating enough already, this newly calculative Mia is actually making me feel sorry for Gabi, which only makes her that much more irritating. I was stunned that she used Nicole's hearing as an opportunity to drive a wedge between Chad and Gabi, the same hearing that they were discussing her baby's death and the kidnapping of Will's baby sister. In doing this she not only undermined Will's importance in her life, but Sydney and Grace's as well...and p

Bad Goodbye: GH

Words cannot express how much I hate the way GH is writing Steve Burton out of the show. I realize his leaving sort of came as a surprise, but in my opinion they could have given him a better send off than the one he is getting. It feels extremely rushed and quite frankly a little convoluted. First of all we have Bernie with his sudden hand-wringing over something that supposedly happened almost a year ago; and he just has to meet Jason on the night he finally reunites with Sam...on the pier no less.  And don't even get me started on how Joe Scully and "Duke Lavery" are involved in all of this. Up until a few months ago Joe was an antiques dealer working in a little known shop that probably wasn't even being used as a front. In addition there is no way Jason would ever allow himself to be shot in the back. He would have looked around the pier to make sure he wasn't walking into an ambush before ever trying to talk to Bernie. However the most upsetting thing about
