Dirty Little Secret: GH

From the moment Lucky began eavesdropping on Liz and Nikolas's conversation I knew that he would somehow miss the part where Liz admitted to having an affair. I assumed this would be for the same mysterious reason that everyone in Port Charles seems to miss important fragments of conversation on a daily basis, not because he couldn't bring himself to listen any longer. I would like to think that this was because on some level he knows that Liz has been cheating on him and he just wasn't ready to hear that fact out loud, but that seems unlikely considering how easily Liz seems to fool every guy she has ever been with. She possesses a certain vulnerability that makes it difficult for many people to see her as anything other than a victim, which makes men feel like they have to protect her. In this way she has become comparable to one of those high school girls that keeps getting boyfriends despite her reputation for ruining their lives. In addition she manages to retain female friends because the same vulnerability that makes men want to protect and defend her makes women feel sorry for her. And of course if any woman like Carly or Sam dares to point out Liz's flaws those women are perceived as being unnecessarily cruel and unfair, which only reinforces the idea of Liz as a victim. Over the past few months, however, it has become quite clear that Liz is anything but a victim, as she continues to do whatever it takes to keep her affair with Nikolas a secret. In the beginning it was easy enough to believe that Liz wanted to keep Lucky from finding out about her affair, in part, to protect his relationship with Nikolas. However, after seeing the way Liz allowed Lucky to blame Nikolas for upsetting her with his declarations of love it is obvious that the only person Liz is concerned with protecting is herself. This was particularly evident when she tried to convince Nikolas to help her lie to Lucky about their feelings for one another so that she could keep her life intact.

  1. Paula,

When I saw the conversation between Lucky and Elizabeth, I got the impression that he was waiting for her to say something and when he said something like I've got a lot of processing to do, it includes her side.

What I enjoyed in yesterday's episode was the "Have a nice trip" scene and then the explosion that had nothing to do with Lulu/Franco. Sort of like the cat jumping out of the cabinet in one of those cheesy teen slasher movies. I'm wondering if the Sam bomb is fake as well.

  2. Hi Peggy,

Good to hear from you again in this new year. :) Yes, Lucky certainly made it seem like he knew more than he was letting on the other day. I'm hoping that at least deep down he knows something is going on with her. I refuse to believe that he is that blinded by her. lol!

I enjoyed that scene too and I can't wait to see what happens today!

  3. Paula,

I saw yesterday's episode, and boy, I don't want to give anything away, but kudos to James Franco for making his character, um, interesting. Can't wait until Monday.

fyi - for some strange reason, my "random" mp3 player played all three versions of "Mad World" while I was doing dishes after I watched GH. Hm......

  4. Hi Peggy!

Yesterday's GH gave me chills. I am going to wait until this Franco thing winds up next week before posting a blog about it, but this has been one of the most bizarre storylines I can remember seeing in a long time. And that is just creepy about your mp3 player, no more listening to that after watching GH! lol!

  5. Hi Paula!
Happy 2010 soap watching...or at least let's hope so.
I knew - when Lucky was eavesdropping - exactly what he was going to take away from that convo. Because as I was listening, it was clear it was only Nik professing his love and Liz was trying to dissuade him...So I totally expected Lucky's assumption - and I totally expected Liz's reaction - unfortunately :(
I personally think the writers are really trashing her character. I just hate this whole storyline.
As far as Franco, the sooner he's gone the better. I've been very underwhelmed by him and by the s/l.

  6. Hi Michele!

Yes, happy soap watching to you too!

I agree, they are totally ruining the Liz character with this storyline. She is walking around like she is half insane, which I guess makes her perfect for Nikolas right now. I'll just be glad when Lucky learns the whole truth. At that point hopefully he will quit trying to make excuses for her behavior.

  7. Paula,

Today's (12/11) is the last day for Franco, for now. Can hardly wait for your post.

  9. Aren't all characters on a soap "ruined" at one time or another? It would be pretty boring if everyone did the right thing all the time. Liz is hardly the first woman in PC to cheat and she won't be the last. The point of this whole betrayal story is to build Lucky and Elizabeth back up again which in turn will redeem Liz from her behavior.

  10. Hi Anonymous!

The way they are ruining the Liz character for me has less to do with her cheating on Lucky and more to do with the way her history is being re-written. It didn't make sense to me that Liz would tell Robin that Nikolas was the first person she ever really enjoyed sleeping with because of the rape. Of course I am paraphrasing here, but if you saw that scene I am sure you know the point I am trying to make is that she cheated on Lucky with Jason so it is difficult to believe her comments about Nikolas. Then there is the fact that Liz keeps lying to everyone about Nikolas, including herself, except when she is with him and she tells him she loves him. Then she says she loves Lucky. All of this just makes her seem a little bit flaky to me and in my opinion that sort of compromises the credibility of the character.

All About Mia: DOOL

After months of allowing herself to be deceived and manipulated by Nicole and Stefano so that she could keep her baby's adoption intact, only to find out that said baby wasn't hers because her baby had died, one would think that Mia would have enough drama to last a lifetime. Instead it seems that she has picked up a few bad habits from Nicole because she has turned to manipulating Gabi in order to stake her claim on Chad, someone she didn't seem to want a few weeks ago. As if the Mia character wasn't irritating enough already, this newly calculative Mia is actually making me feel sorry for Gabi, which only makes her that much more irritating. I was stunned that she used Nicole's hearing as an opportunity to drive a wedge between Chad and Gabi, the same hearing that they were discussing her baby's death and the kidnapping of Will's baby sister. In doing this she not only undermined Will's importance in her life, but Sydney and Grace's as well...and p

Bad Goodbye: GH

Words cannot express how much I hate the way GH is writing Steve Burton out of the show. I realize his leaving sort of came as a surprise, but in my opinion they could have given him a better send off than the one he is getting. It feels extremely rushed and quite frankly a little convoluted. First of all we have Bernie with his sudden hand-wringing over something that supposedly happened almost a year ago; and he just has to meet Jason on the night he finally reunites with Sam...on the pier no less.  And don't even get me started on how Joe Scully and "Duke Lavery" are involved in all of this. Up until a few months ago Joe was an antiques dealer working in a little known shop that probably wasn't even being used as a front. In addition there is no way Jason would ever allow himself to be shot in the back. He would have looked around the pier to make sure he wasn't walking into an ambush before ever trying to talk to Bernie. However the most upsetting thing about
